Lagos, Portugal

Cliff coves, the Age of Discovery harbour and expat favourite

Lagos’ harbour launched the caravels of the Portuguese Age of Discovery — Henry the Navigator kept his school of navigation here — and its riverside city walls still frame a compact old town. West of the centre, the coastline becomes the Algarve’s most sculpted: Dona Ana, Camilo, Ponta da Piedade’s golden towers.

What to see

Living in Lagos

Lagos is the western Algarve’s expat centre — strong British, Dutch and German presence, international schooling nearby, and a genuine year-round town under the summer layer. Rents and purchase prices run below the Quinta do Lago belt but above the Alentejan coast an hour north.
