Portugal’s Digital Nomad Visa (D8): Income Rules and 2026 Reality

Last verified: October 2026

Portugal formalised its remote-work visa as the D8 in 2022, and it has become the standard route for location-independent income. In 2026 the core rule stands: prove monthly income of at least four times the Portuguese minimum wage — roughly €3,480–3,600 — from employment or freelance activity performed for clients outside Portugal.

The tax-residency question — the part people skip

A D8 holder living in Portugal 183+ days becomes tax resident: foreign employment income for a foreign employer generally isn’t Portuguese-taxed for the first stretch under Article 12 relief, but the clock and conditions matter — and tech professionals may qualify for the IFICI 20% regime instead. Choose the analysis before arrival: D8 + correct tax posture is clean; D8 + accidental residency is the expensive version.

The D8 converts to a two-year residence permit, renewable, and counts toward permanent residence at five years. Madeira and the Azores run popular remote-worker programmes on top, with their own incentives.
