Getting a NIF in Portugal 2026: The Number That Unlocks Everything

Last verified: October 2026

The NIF — Número de Identificação Fiscal — is Portugal’s nine-digit tax identification number, and it is the first domino of the entire move: no rental contract, no utilities, no bank account, no phone plan and no property deed will move without it. Shops ask for it on large purchases, loyalty programs store it, and even a supermarket card application wants it. Get the NIF before you get anything else.

Where and how to get it

Why it comes first

The dependency chain is strict: banks require a NIF to open even a non-resident account; landlords write it into lease contracts; utilities and mobile carriers bill against it; and the AIMA residence file lists it. Sequencing matters — the standard order is NIF → bank account → lease → utilities → visa/AIMA, and each step feeds the next. People who arrive without a NIF lose weeks renting temporary accommodation on tourist terms.

Do not confuse the tax numbers: NIF is the tax ID, NISS is the social-security number, and the número de utente is your SNS health user number. Three systems, three offices, three cards — you will collect all three eventually, but only the NIF unlocks the first month.

Next steps: the bank account guide, the full relocation roadmap and the Golden Visa requirements if investment residency is your route.
