Best Time to Visit Portugal: Month by Month
Portugal’s tourist seasons have clear mechanics: June–August brings heat, crowds and peak prices; April–May and September–October deliver most of the weather with a fraction of the queues; November–March splits into green-and-rainy north and mild-and-sunny south. The best answer depends on which Portugal you’re coming for.
By season
- April–June: greenest country, hydrangeas in the Azores from June, sea still cool (16–18°C), ideal hiking and city weather
- July–August: beach season — sea 19–21°C Atlantic / 22–24°C Algarve, interiors hot (35°C+ in the Alentejo), everything crowded, everything open
- September–October: the connoisseur’s pick — warm sea at its peak, harvest in the Douro, emptying beaches
- November–March: Algarve and Madeira winter in 15–18°C sun; Porto and the north go green and dramatic; Lisbon runs social year-round
Fixed points of the calendar
June’s Santos Populares turn Lisbon and Porto into street-party cities for a month (book far ahead). February brings carnival; Easter week is busy nationwide; the Algarve’s sardine season peaks in August; the Festa dos Tabuleiros in Tomar returns every four years (next 2027). New Year fireworks in Funchal are among Europe’s most famous.
Some visitors end up choosing a month to move, not to visit.
When that happens, Daria Melnik Realty turns the calendar into a relocation plan.
