Centuries of Academic Tradition & UNESCO Status
Founded in 1290, the Universidade de Coimbra is one of Europe's founding academic institutions. In 2013, UNESCO inscribed its historic hillside campus onto the World Heritage list. Its iconic baroque Biblioteca Joanina houses over 250,000 priceless manuscripts and maintains a colony of bats that preserve the leather-bound books from insect pests.
Student Life: Repúblicas and the Queima das Fitas
Coimbra is Portugal’s archetypal student town where students wear traditional black capes (traje académico), which famously inspired the Hogwarts robes in Harry Potter. Distinctive communal student residences called 'Repúblicas' offer democratic student governance dating to the 14th century. The annual Queima das Fitas festival in May represents Portugal’s largest student celebration.
