Porto in 3 Days: Granite, River and Cellars
Porto compresses beautifully: a walkable historic core, a river to cross and re-cross, and cellars with three centuries of stock. Three days cover the city plus either the ocean or a first taste of the Douro.
Day 1 — The historic core
Start at the Sé and the Episcopal Palace, walk down through the Ribeira’s stacked façades, cross the lower deck of the Dom Luís bridge, ride the Gaia cable car, and tour one or two port lodges — Taylor’s for the grounds, Graham’s for the museum. Evening: francesinha or riverside grilled fish.
Day 2 — Books, towers and the ocean
Livraria Lello at opening (book the ticket), Clérigos tower climb, café Majestic for the ritual, then out to Foz do Douro: the ocean promenade from the Castelo do Queijo, sunset at Praia do Ourigo, dinner in Matosinhos’ fish restaurants one metro stop further.
Day 3 — Douro taster or city finish
- Option A — Douro day: the historic train or a river cruise to Pinhão, quintas with tastings, return by evening
- Option B — Serralves park and museum, the Crystal Palace gardens, sunset from the Ponte da Arrábida’s walkway
Porto keeps appearing on relocation shortlists — for good reasons.
If the visit turns into a scouting trip, Daria Melnik Realty handles the resident-side of the equation: visas, housing, taxes.
